One day in Delmonico’s, Gloria and Rachael had come upon Bloeckman and Mr. Gilbert having luncheon and curiosity had impelled her to make it a party of four. She had liked him—rather. He was a relief from younger men, satisfied as he was with so little. He humored her and he laughed, whether he understood her or not. She met him several times, despite the open disapproval of her parents, and within a month he had asked her to marry him, tendering her everything from a villa in Italy to a brilliant career on the screen. She had laughed in his face—and he had laughed too.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Opened in 1827 as a small café and pastry shop; over time it became a true hospitality empire, with several high-end restaurants frequented by industrial magnates, political elites, and leading cultural figures. Delmonico’s early phase is widely recognized as the origin point of fine dining in the United States: it drove innovations in the restaurant world, helped establish a standard of excellence, and became associated with the creation of dishes that later turned into classics. Under the Delmonico family’s ownership and management, the firm closed all its venues in 1923. It reopened in 1926 under new ownership, when Italian immigrant Oscar Tucci revived the name at a new establishment.
