“Do you come to these parties often?” inquired Jordan of the girl beside her.
“The last one was the one I met you at,” answered the girl, in an alert confident voice. She turned to her companion: “Wasn’t it for you, Lucille?”
It was for Lucille, too.
“I like to come,” Lucille said. “I never care what I do, so I always have a good time. When I was here last I tore my gown on a chair, and he asked me my name and address—inside of a week I got a package from Croirier’s with a new evening gown in it.”
The Great Gatsby
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Fictional brand. It is possibly inspired by Callot Soeurs, a luxury brand founded in Paris by the four Callot sisters in 1895. Callot Soeurs arrived in the United States during the 1915 San Francisco World's Fair. Its success caught the attention of Henri Bendel, who began selling its dresses in the brand's New York department stores. Its evening gowns were among the most coveted by high society in the 1920s. The company was acquired as a brand by the Calvet fashion house in 1937 and finally disappeared in 1952. The luxury department store Henri Bendel, whose flagship store was located at 10 West 57th Street until 1980, when it moved to 714 Fifth Avenue, closed its doors in 2019.
