BOOK

The minutes passed and Amory sat there very quietly. He regretted the rule that would forbid freshmen to be outdoors after curfew, for he wanted to ramble through the shadowy scented lanes, where Witherspoon brooded like a dark mother over Whig and Clio, her Attic children, where the black Gothic snake of Little curled down to Cuyler and Patton, these in turn flinging the mystery out over the placid slope rolling to the lake.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Built in 1893 as the headquarters of the Cliosophic Society, Clio Hall was built at the same time as its twin, Whig Hall, replacing earlier mid-19th-century wooden buildings. Both were designed in marble by A. Page Brown in the Ionic style, resembling a classical temple. Following the merger with the American Whig Society in 1929, the building served various purposes and for a time housed the Music Department. In 1963, its interior was renovated and it was used for personnel services and, later, also for career services.
